Hinsdale County was named in honor of George A. Hinsdale who was the first lieutenant governor in 1865.

The Presybyterian Church was the first religious organization in town, established in June, 1875 by Reverend Alex Darley.
The first newspaper published in the county was the "Silver World", published on June 19, 1875.
Electricity was first brought to the Hinsdale County by George W. Crow in 1880.
